Due to fossil fuels, there's many social changes. The toll the energy took on us is apparent, for example, the usage of electricity and gasoline. The steam engine played a huge role, it was the first convertor of chemical energy.

Societies use energy because there's not alternative. Animals use energy, plants use energy, societies are just the ways that a particular animal (us) organizes itself. We're living beings on this Earth, we have to use energy. The questions are: How much? From what sources? For what purposes?
